Hours per week: Variable. RSL Senior Subject Experts are self-employed contractors, and successful applicants will enter into a provision of service agreement with RSL Awards Ltd.
Rate of pay: Fee based per assignment

Job Summary / Purpose
A Senior Subject Expert (SSE) is responsible for interpretation of the specifications and for verifier standardisation across a range of programmes with a Principal Subject Area. The Senior Subject Expert is the responsible expert, in terms of specification interpretation and verifier standardisation, for a range of programmes within a Principal Subject Area (PSA).
Senior Subject Experts in dance, drama, music performance/composition and music technology will also be responsible for external assessor standardisation for those subject areas.
The main responsibilities of this role will be to support the maintenance of standards for RSL vocational qualifications.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Offer specialist advice and support to centres and standards verifiers in relation to the content and interpretation of specifications, assessment and delivery
- Undertake sampling of learner’s work within defined parameters and rules to verify that assessment outcomes, assessment and internal verification processes meet national standards
- Develop and deliver training and standardisation to standards verifiers and external assessors, in collaboration with the Head of Quality (VQ) and Head of Assessment.
- Provide support, advice, guidance and development to standards verifiers during the moderation process
- Provide support, advice, guidance and development to external assessors during the assessment process
- Conduct randomised samples of the standards verifier’s/external assessor reports throughout the moderation and assessment processes, providing supportive and developmental feedback, risk rating their work and providing an end of session report.
- Carry out enforced centre visits as necessary as the final stage of moderation, overseen by the Head of Quality (VQ)
- Write a subject expert report for externally assessed units at the end of the assessment period
- Provide subject specific continuous professional development sessions and edit standardisation materials for centres as required
- Attend and provide reports for assessment committee
Qualifications
Essential
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience of external verification of centre based vocational qualifications within the sector
- Minimum of 2 years proven track record of effective people management
- Minimum of 2 years assessment and internal verification experience in centre based vocational qualifications in the subject area applied for
- Minimum of one year’s teaching experience of the relevant subject and level
- A degree qualification or Level 6 in the relevant subject area e.g. BA Hons (Drama)
- A PGCE or other teaching qualification (minimum Level 5)
- Excellent communication, written, verbal, IT and interpersonal skills
- Ability to self-motivate and work independently to deadlines
Desirable
- Experience of a similar role for another awarding organisation
- Experience with delivery, assessment and quality assurance of RSL qualifications
