Drums, Music Theory.
Tom moved to the northeast to study a BA Hons Degree in Music at Newcastle University and continued his studies further to achieve a Mmus Masters Degree, also in Music. These studies included various forms of music pedagogy as well as looking in depth at performance practice itself, studying under notorious north east drummer and teacher Geoff Hutchinson for a number of years. These studies cumulated into an end of year recital looking into the art of funk drumming playing in a large scale band as well as an academic dissertation into the art of instrumental practice. Tom now plays professionally around the northeast and other parts of the UK and works in a number of different environments from recording sessions, live music in a number of genres as well as musical theatre. Tom teaches a wide array of genres, ages and abilities and no student is too young or old, all that is needed is a willingness to learn! Lessons are student-led and any goal a student wishes to work towards from becoming a drummer in a band to being a full-time musician or passing a grade exam can be worked towards. Tom's studio is located in Newcastle's creative hub in the Ouseburn Valley and is fully equipped with 2 drum kits to help easily show students examples, as well a full PA system to allow students to play along to anything necessary. Feel free to contact Tom if you have the slightest query!
Our son started playing a year ago at the age of 6 and has developed great enthusiasm and competency in playing the acoustic drums. Tom has nurtured his developing skills and has celebrated each milestone he has achieved. We are delighted at how far he has come on and that he has now commenced his Grade 1 tuition. - Kim, parent of Patrick.
My son, now 11, expressed an interest in drumming over two years ago. We found Tom as an instructor, who, has taught Ben each week for coming up to two years now. During this time Ben has continually improved and retained enthusiasm for improving his skills to the point now where he has now just sat his grade 4 exam. Tom’s teaching style is very professional, with an obvious love for his profession and real talent for teaching. Tom is a highly qualified, educated musician, where he has involved parents of students in his own career with regular invites to watch him play with his band. Tom has organised events where students are invited to perform in front of small crowds with the intention to develop their confidence when performing, all off his own back and with no expectations other than to develop the skills of his students. I cannot speak highly enough of Tom, he is just a genuinely nice young man, he has never missed a lesson and has always been very punctual. Whatever Tom does in the future I wish him the very best….. As long as he keeps teaching Ben! - Scott, parent of Ben.
My son Andrew has been under Toms tutelage for well over a year and has thoroughly enjoyed Toms patience, enthusiasm and teaching methods. Tom has always been flexible with times and cancellations when on occasion things crop up. He has been involved in organising a number of enjoyable events for his students, including a drumming recital in front of an audience which all this pupils enjoyed. He has passed his grade 4 exam and is awaiting the results of his grade 5.
Tom also has structured lessons to give my daughter a great introduction to drumming to help her achieve her Duke Of Edinburgh Silver award.
The facilities are great, with acoustic drums, plenty of room and parking facilities.
Roy, parent of Andrew.
