Nick Baker is Drumology’s principle drum set teacher. Bringing over 40 years of live playing & teaching experience, Nick has played in bands of varying styles including Rock, Pop, Blues, Soul, Latin & Jazz. His playing experience covers live performance, tribute bands, recording, radio, theatre, touring. Nick was resident drum teacher at the Music Stop in North London & was hosting classes every Saturday at “Stable Yard Music” in the beautiful grounds of Hatfield House before opening his own fully equipped air conditioned studio in Welwyn. Nick has studied with proven teachers, John Taylor (Footes), Rob Stevens (W.D.C.), Ralph Salmins (U.K. Session Drummer) & the acclaimed Australian drummer & author Darryn Farrugia. As well as Rockschool Drum Grades, Nick has studied at Drumtech (Tech Schools Acton) achieving a Diploma in Drum Performance. His teaching style brings out the best quality in every student. Whilst providing a structure and discipline to each lesson, he still makes it fun & encourages students to be creative and to develop their improvisation skills, stylistic playing, technique & reading ability. “I first picked up drum sticks at the age of 10 & since then I have been taught by a variety of teachers of all ages & abilities & in turn I have taught a variety of students of all ages & abilities. This has helped me develop my own technique, combining the best of all the learning & the best of all the teaching”
Aside from Nick being an excellent drummer in his own right, he has all the qualities required to make him the consummate tutor. He:
- Is patient (a must have!)
- Is full of encouragement
- Is reliable
- Is highly skilled in all aspects of percussion genres specifically and music generally
- Provides explanations which are clear and precise
- Provides excellent hand outs for each session/exercise
- Is very likeable
Nick’s youngest recruit is 8 years old and I am his second oldest student and he easily adapts to the differing levels of pace and tuition needed across all ages and abilities.
I am very happy to recommend Nick to anyone wishing to learn to play the drums.”
