At RSL, we LOVE to celebrate the talented musicians that have made the journey through our grades. This week, we had the absolute pleasure of speaking to a fiercely talented young drummer called Henry Chauhan.
Can you sum up your musical journey so far?
I started playing drums at the age of 5 and got to grade 8 through Rockschool by the time I was 10. I thought a good next step would be to start a YouTube channel to start showcasing my playing and see where it goes… Eventually I acquired an audience and got multiple opportunities like being sponsored by Pear, Sabian Remo and Wincent Sticks, collaborating with other musicians around the world, and some other cool things I’ll be announcing later this year!
Wow, it’s really incredible to see how far you’ve come since starting your YouTube channel, and you’ve got an audience of over 77 thousand! How does that feel?!
It’s given me a platform to share my passion for drumming, to play my favourite music and has given me the opportunity to collaborate with people from all over the world – making me more determined to reach my goals.
The future is something we can’t wait to hear about, but first, we’d love to ask you about where it all began. When did you start using Rockschool? And why do you think it has worked for you?
I’ve been using Rockschool since I started playing drums. I’ve always liked the variety of music genres which has led me to my passion for rock music!
Do you have a favourite performance piece?
My favourite piece was “Meet Darth Ear” from the grade 8 book. It helped me improve my footwork accuracy!
And how has your teacher influenced you along your journey? How would you describe their teaching style?
My drum teacher Tim Tandler is amazing. He has influenced me with his unique drumming style and his methods of teaching suits my style of learning.
That’s hugely important and it’s brilliant to have found a teacher that you are so compatible with. Were there any musicians who inspired you to start playing in the first place?
When I first started playing drums, the drummer John Bonham had a great influence on me because of his advanced kickdrum work.
We love John Bonham too! And so what does the future hold for Henry Chauhan?
My musical goal is to be a drummer in a band and to carry on improving my playing, because drumming is what I love to do!
Henry, we cannot wait to see where the next 10 years take you! We will be cheerleading you all the way.
Keep your eyes peeled, folks, because we’re certain this will not be the last you see of Henry Chauhan!
