At Acoustic Guitar Grade 2 you'll begin learning the fundamental techniques you'll need to develop a career as a skilled rock and pop guitarist. You will be examined on your choice of performance pieces from artists such as Ed Sheeran, Jeff Buckley and Oasis.

Technical Exercises

A selection will be asked from three sections:

  • D and Bb major scales and their relative minors
  • Major, minor and dominant arpeggios
  • Dominant 7th and minor 6th voicings

Sight Reading or Improvisation & Interpretation

At Grade 2 you will be offered either Sight Reading or Improvisation & Interpretation.

Sight Reading
  • 4-8 bars in the keys of Bb major and D major
Improvisation & Interpretation
  • 4-8 bars in the keys of Bb major and D major

Ear Tests

There are two ear tests at Grade 2: Melodic Recall and Chord Recognition.

General Musicianship Questions

Candidates will be asked five questions relating to one of their choice of Performance pieces. The areas covered will include: Melody, Harmony, Rhythm, Technique and Genre.

Timing

Your Grade 2 exam lasts 20 minutes for a Grade Exam or 17 minutes for a Performance Certificate. Candidates are asked to arrive at least 15 minutes before their exam starts.
