Technical Exercises

A selection will be asked from three sections:

  • Minor 11th chords
  • The Phrygian mode
  • Dominant 9th chords

Sight Reading or Improvisation & Interpretation

At Grade 4 you will be offered either Sight Reading or Improvisation & Interpretation.

Sight Reading
  • 8-16 bars in the keys of E major and Ab major
Improvisation & Interpretation
  • 8-16 bars in the keys of E major and Ab major

Ear Tests

There are two ear tests at Grade 4: Melodic Recall and Harmonic Recall.

General Musicianship Questions

Candidates will be asked five questions.

Timing

Your Grade 4 exam lasts 27 minutes for a Grade Exam or 24 minutes for a Performance Certificate. Candidates are asked to arrive at least 15 minutes before their exam starts.
