Technical Exercises

A selection will be asked from three sections:

  • Minor 7b5
  • The Locrian mode
  • Diminished arpeggios

Sight Reading or Improvisation & Interpretation

At Grade 5 you will be offered either Sight Reading or Improvisation & Interpretation.

Sight Reading
  • 8-16 bars in the key of Db major and B major
Improvisation & Interpretation
  • 8-16 bars in the key of Db major and B major

Ear Tests

There are two ear tests at Grade 5: Melodic Recall and Harmonic Recall.

General Musicianship Questions

Candidates will be asked five questions.

Your Grade 5 exam lasts 27 minutes for a Grade Exam or 24 minutes for a Performance Certificate. Candidates are asked to arrive at least 15 minutes before their exam starts.
