Pathways Information

This suite of qualifications has been designed to provide vocationally relevant courses in popular music aimed at beginners through to semi-professionals, which allow for direct progression into the industry and/or progression to a higher level of study. It focuses upon the recognition of achievement through practical musical skills, business skills and music technology skills, as well as offering the flexibility of unit combination.

For Non-Performance Tables, the qualifications range from Level 1 to Level 3, with four pathways at each level. The final qualification will be awarded upon successful completion of a specified number of credits at each level. There are four types of final award at Levels 1 & 2; Award, Certificate, Extended Certificate and Diploma. At Level 3 there are five types of final award: Certificate, Extended Certificate, Subsidiary Diploma, Diploma and Extended Diploma.

For Tech Levels, The Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma and Level 3 Extended Diploma for Music Practitioners provide music industry qualifications that will equip learners with the skills, knowledge and understanding for entry to employment in the music industry or progression to further study at a higher level.

The qualifications are divided into specific pathways, offering the opportunity to undertake specialised learning that can be accurately matched to specific career sectors in the music industry. The array of optional units within the qualifications also allows learners to cover a range of aspects of the music industry, whichever pathway they select, reflecting the nature of employment within the music industry which often involves individuals undertaking multiple roles as part of a ‘portfolio career’, many in a freelance capacity.

Pathway Profiles

Each pathway embodies a specific profile of study and this informs the core unit choices, which you are guided to make. Learners will be led by centres when choosing the pathway options available to them, and the units within their chosen pathway.

Performance

Learners will:

Non-Performance Tables

RSL Music Practitioners qualifications consist of two types of unit:

  • Core (mandatory) units: chosen depending on the pathway
  • Optional units: open to all pathways

All of the units in this qualification suite are internally assessed — staff in centres provide assessment opportunities for, and assess the work produced by, learners.

Tech Levels

The learner can follow one of four pathways:

  • Performance
  • Composition
  • Technology
  • Business

Core externally assessed units

Learners taking the Subsidiary Diploma undertake one externally assessed core unit which is relevant to their chosen pathway. Learners taking the Extended Diploma undertake two externally assessed core units, relevant to their chosen pathway.

Core internally assessed unit

All learners undertake an internally assessed core unit (Planning a Career in Music).

Optional internally assessed units

All learners can select a number of optional units in order to develop their skills and understanding in areas relevant to their chosen pathway.

Core, Optional & Skills Units

In addition to the mandatory core units, learners can select from a number of optional units, which are open to all pathways. The number of optional units selected will depend on the chosen type of final award. Learners can also take additional ‘core’ units, from any of the pathways, which will be considered as optional units within the qualification.

Music Rehearsal Skills

This unit aims to introduce learners to the processes of effective rehearsal, which underpin live performance.
The purpose of the unit is to begin to facilitate the development of the skills required to function effectively in a rehearsal environment, with the aim of rehearsing for a specific performance event.

Putting On An Event

This unit aims to develop the learner’s organisational and team working skills.
By contributing to the programming, promotion and staging of an event, learners will identify personal aptitudes towards a range of job roles and responsibilities, and work together on a project.

Music Sequencing & Production

This unit aims to introduce learners to the processes involved in using music sequencing software.
The purpose of this unit is to enable learners to appreciate the key functions of a sequencing package and put them into practice.

Practical Harmony

This unit aims to introduce the learner to the concept of harmonic construction through practical application.
The purpose of the unit is to develop practical knowledge and skills on a harmony instrument so that it may be used effectively as a compositional tool

Earning Money in the Music Industry

This unit aims to introduce learners to key revenue streams within the music industry.
The purpose of the unit is to provide opportunities to analyse the main areas of revenue generation through composition and recording, to enable learners to understand the ways in which an artist earns money.

Music Stage Manager (Assistant)

This unit aims to introduce learners to the role and responsibilities of the assistant stage manager at a live music event, providing an opportunity for the learner to undertake the role in context.
The purpose of this unit is to give learners the opportunity to find out what goes into stage-managing a music event and what affects the success of the event.

Selling Music

This unit aims to enable learners to understand the current key processes involved in the sale of music.
By identifying key stages in the chain and the points at which revenue is generated, learners will understand how the process might apply to themselves as artists.

Music Video Production

This unit aims to provide learners with an opportunity to develop practical film making skills in the context of the music video. The purpose of the unit is to facilitate the creation of a short music video.

Live Music Performance

This unit aims to further develop learners’ abilities in the area of live performance.
The purpose of the unit is to provide learners with an opportunity to undertake performance appropriate to a defined environment.

Composing for Film & Documentary

The aim of this unit is to develop the learner’s technical and creative knowledge and understanding as composers of music in the genres of film and documentary.
The purpose of the unit is to provide learners with the opportunity to develop skills in composing for film and documentary developing, through the creation of two contrasting pieces of music, a deep understanding of the musical requirements within the specific media context.

Composing Lyrics

This unit aims to develop learners’ skills in writing effective lyrics for music composition, developing an understanding of the key concepts of working to a brief.
The purpose of this unit is to provide opportunities to explore lyric writing devices, thereby giving learners the capacity to compose lyrics for a range of different briefs.

Understanding Recording Studio Design

The aim of this unit is to facilitate a sound understanding of the logistical, financial and Health & Safety implications of equipping and running a professional level recording studio.
The purpose of this unit is to develop the learner’s understanding of the considerations and implications of designing a recording studio.

Dance for Musicians

This unit aims to develop skills in dance for performance routines designed to accompany popular music performance.
The purpose of the unit is to provide learners with the opportunity to gain a practical understanding of rehearsing and performing as a dancer in a popular music performance context.

Lighting for Music Events

The aim of this unit is to develop the learner’s ability to accurately assess the stage lighting requirements for a commercial event, in order to create and manage the lighting system.
The purpose of this unit is to enable learners to evaluate, setup, control and dismantle a lighting rig for a commercial event.

Royalties and Music

This unit aims to develop the learners’ understanding of revenue streams within the UK music industry by focusing on generating income from royalties.
The purpose of the unit is to provide opportunities to explore the mechanisms for the collection and distribution of royalties, the main organisations involved in this area of the music industry and how this knowledge may be applied to generating income from learners’ own musical activity.

Music Marketing

The unit aims to develop the learner’s understanding of the marketing process and develop their ability to apply the marketing process to their own output. By analysing the use of marketing techniques on existing product, learners will then apply concepts to their own work.

Music Press and Journalism

This unit aims to develop learners’ understanding of processes and practices of journalism and the press surrounding the UK music industry.
The unit will serve to provide learners with opportunities to apply the journalistic process to a topic of their choice and create a piece of journalism in a defined context.

Using Dynamic Processors

This unit has two aims: to develop learners’ skills in using dynamic processing correctively to enhance a mix and to enable learners to use dynamic processing in a creative way on a recording.
The purpose of this unit is to use dynamic processors as applied to a multi-track recording to alter their sound in a creative and corrective way.

Funding

RSL has a huge range of qualifications at each level which are funded for delivery in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. RSL qualifications are also available for funded delivery in Scotland in certain settings at certain levels. Get in touch for more info.

Help, Support & Quality Assurance

You will get access to RSL’s Help & Support portal, containing multiple QA resources, guidance documents, templates and exemplar materials, plus footage from previously recorded CPD events.

Centres have contact with two allocated RSL Quality Assurance representatives from the start of delivery all the way through to certification. These named contacts will offer the following services to support centre delivery:

  • Annual centre visit – a supportive process designed to monitor and review the way in which qualifications are planned and delivered
  • A point of contact for subject-specific academic queries throughout delivery
  • Building of a strong relationship throughout the duration of the qualification, resulting in moderation of your learner evidence with a known, named contact already familiar with your centre

This is found here. Once you have submitted this, our team will be in touch with some login credentials for our website, along with details of the next step.

2. Prepare your full centre approval application for submission.

Our centre approval application pack details all supporting documents that need to be included, along with a guidance document for completing the form itself.

3. Approval complete!

If the application is complete our team will be in touch to inform you of your new status as an approved RSL Awards delivery centre!

Qualification Details and Registration Fees

Our qualification registration fees are the same for both UK and International delivery centres. These fees apply to each registered learner, with the fee dependent on the size of qualification they are registered on.
