Diploma in Teaching (Further Education & Skills)
Level 5

A regulated teaching qualification for post-16 providers

The RSL Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (Further Education and Skills) is a nationally recognised qualification for post-16 education and training. It is recognised by the Education and Training Foundation and may support progression towards Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status (QTLS), subject to current regulatory requirements.

For centres, it provides a structured framework for developing competent teachers through workplace practice, observation and assessment. Centres must be approved to deliver this qualification.

Developing FE Teachers Without a Structured Pathway?

Many Further Education providers appoint subject specialists who begin teaching immediately. They are delivering sessions, supporting diverse learner needs and managing classroom dynamics before undertaking formal teacher training.

The demands of the sector continue to evolve. Expectations around pedagogy, inclusion, digital delivery and observation standards are increasing. Without a structured development route, centres risk inconsistency in teaching practice and limited progression pathways for staff.

While traditional routes such as full-time PGCE programmes can require fixed schedules and time away from the workplace, many providers need a model that supports in-role development.

This qualification provides a regulated framework for developing teachers who are already delivering in post. It supports centres in strengthening teaching practice, formalising professional recognition and building long-term stability within their teaching teams.
