It’s (almost) summer; it’s Festival Season; and most importantly: it’s the RSL Newsletter for May ’19!

The Music Production and Music Theory exam deadlines are fast approaching! For everyone who has been putting the hours in for this term, please ensure that your entry is processed before midnight on the following dates:

Young Drummer of the Year

A huge congratulations to Rockschool alumni Nathan Shingler, 16, who has been awarded the drummer of the year award! The yearly run competition celebrates young talented drummers aged 16 and under, based in the UK.

Nathan was selected from 40 shortlisted entrants to be one of the 10 chosen to perform live at the Artrix Arts Centre, near Birmingham. This is a wonderful achievement and we wish Nathan all the best in the future – we’ll be watching!

RSL China Reps Conference 2019!

The RSL China office recently organised an action-packed four-day national reps conference in Xi’an: one of China’s Four Great Ancient Capitals.

With over 150 attendees, it was a great opportunity for teachers from all over the country to share their teaching experiences. RSL China’s General Manager, Lillian Lan, delivered her thoughts on 2018, alongside the challenges and opportunities she sees for this year and beyond.

We’d like to thank Lillian and the entire RSL China team and look forward to another busy year in the East!

PAA in South Africa!

We are thrilled to announce that the first ever PAA exams in South Africa have taken place at the Safata Arts Academy this month. Students performing in their version of Dreams (The Musical) were assessed for their Musical Theatre exams during the show at the Roodepoort Theatre.

Examiner, Naomé Bezuidenhout, shares a proud moment with students: Ryan, Meyer, Lara, Balo and Amy from SAFATA at the Roodepoort Theatre

New Addition to team RSL!

We are delighted to welcome our new Marketing and Communications Director, Nathalie Gouverneur, to the RSL team! As a strategic and commercially-minded branding and marketing professional, Nathalie has implemented and launched award-winning customer-centric campaigns and developed both creative and strategic multi-brand positioning solutions.

A photography enthusiast in the entertainment industry and shooting concerts, Nathalie has worked with Celine Dion, Chris Rock, Madonna, 50 Cent, Joe Cocker and Enrique Iglesias.

"Favourite artist? Too many to mention! But high-level I would have to say Madonna, (that is until I saw her performance at the recent Eurovision Song Contest...). I admire her more as a brand: I think she has been an undeniable genius, having a chameleon-like ability to re-invent herself ahead of any prevailing cultural wind, whilst remaining true to her brand attributes over the last 3 decades.

Welcome on board!

UCan Play, based in Sandbach (Cheshire), is a not-for-profit company supporting music education across the United Kingdom, through a range of innovative projects and partnerships (such as ours!).

“UCan Play is delighted to provide UCan Studios as a brand-new facility for Rockschool GME’s. We’ll also be running some exclusive offers on our musical instruments and technologies for anyone taking a Rockschool exam – so keep an eye on our online shop for details!” Jonathan Savage, Managing Director.

Soundbox Studios, based in Sutton (South London), has been in operation since 2014. They offer tuition services in mixing, mastering and recording and have hosted recording sessions with artists such as Conor Maynard, Kasai and Daecolm.

Forest Arts Music Hub, based in Walsall, has a flourishing Rock and Pop programme. As one of the many Music Hubs supported by Arts Council England they offer children and young people the chance to gain experience in performing at authentic music venues, as well as unique recording opportunities in state-of-the-art facilities.

“We welcome the inclusion of The Forest Arts Centre as a public examination centre for Rockschool exams, where we can continue to encourage our budding musicians to reach ever greater heights on their journey towards super-stardom!” Glen Taylor, Commissioner for Music Education.
