Las Vegas natives, The Killers, have just been announced as a Glastonbury 2019 headliner. For all those lucky enough to get tickets, grooving away to ‘Mr Brightside’ is sure to be one of the highlights of the summer.
The indie anthem, which features on our Rockschool Keys Debut Grade, was the first single to be released by The Killers. It featured on their debut album Hot Fuss (2004), which many critics compared to the work of new wave and post-punk acts such as Joy Division, Gang of Four, Wire, The Fall, Magazine, and The Cure.
The song was originally released on September 29 2003 and achieved only minor notoriety. It became more popular upon its re-release in 2004, peaking at number 10 in both the US and UK singles charts. ‘Mr. Brightside’ went on to be named ‘Song of the Decade’ by Absolute Radio and XFM, and in April 2010 Last.fm disclosed that it was the most listened to track since the launch of the online music service, with over 12.2 million plays. It is still one of the top fifteen most downloaded rock tracks ever in the UK.
The Killers have released five consecutive chart topping studio albums and have seven Grammy nominations, three Brit Awards and seven NME awards under their belt (to name but a few). Having sold an estimated 22 million albums worldwide, they are arguably one of the most successful rock acts of the modern era.
