Earlier this month, our team had the privilege of visiting the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst to deliver a two-day CPD training session for the Army Engagement Ensemble. Together, we explored improvisation techniques and creative approaches using the Rockschool Horn Section syllabus. This immersive session was a unique blend of military precision and musical expression, introducing new layers of creativity to the Ensemble’s musical journey.
Background on the Rockschool Horn Section Syllabus
Our Rockschool Horn Section syllabus has been designed to inspire and equip musicians with versatile skills, encompassing genres from contemporary music to jazz. This syllabus provides a structured yet flexible approach to horn playing, allowing musicians to develop creativity and technical proficiency.

Day 1: Masterclass in Rockschool Horn Section Techniques
The first day of our training session was dedicated to understanding the fundamentals of the Rockschool Horn Section syllabus. This masterclass introduced techniques essential to horn musicianship, with an emphasis on versatility and adaptability. Musicians engaged with techniques that enhance their skill set across various styles, focusing on the unique challenges and expressive qualities inherent in horn section performance.
Day 2: Improvisation Workshop – Unleashing Creativity
The second day shifted focus towards improvisation, a vital skill often outside the conventional scope of Army music. Participants delved into the building blocks of soloing, with the instructors guiding them through the essential concepts of jazz improvisation, music modes, and practical applications in performance. Musicians engaged in hands-on exercises designed to draw out individual creativity and expressiveness, led by experienced jazz musicians.
This workshop was a refreshing challenge for the Army Engagement Ensemble, whose musicians typically perform in more structured settings. With newfound insights, participants learned to harness improvisational skills that could add a fresh dynamic to their performances.
Insights from Nathan Theodoulou on leading the Ensemble
Nathan Theodoulou, our Director of Product & Marketing at RSL Awards, led the Ensemble through these sessions. Reflecting on the experience, he shared:
“Over two days at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, I gave the ensemble some training on improvisation and creativity, using the fantastic Rockschool Horn Section syllabus.
These wonderful musicians trusted me to lead them in marching to a different drum, improvisation isn’t often a feature of Army music. But after a couple of days, the creativity was really flowing.
So, a big thanks to the band for letting me put them through their paces. Although, apparently, next time I’m there, they’re taking me on parade!?! My turn to be out of my comfort zone.”
