Many of us witnessed the incredible rise to fame of Lewis Capaldi. In 2019, he was quite literally EVERYWHERE with his sensational vocals, heart-felt lyrics and hilarious character.

Setting the Record

Born and raised in Scotland, Lewis Capaldi emerged from humble beginnings. His mother a nurse and father a fishmonger, Capaldi kicked off his musical career singing his heart out in the local pubs at the age of 9. By 17, there was no question that a full-blown career in music was the path he would take.

At 18 years old, manager Ryan Walter noticed Capaldi through an iPhone recording that he’d recorded in his bedroom and uploaded to SoundCloud. Walter flew across the Atlantic, eager to hear more! 2017 saw the release of Lewis Capaldi’s first EP. It contained a track called “Bruises” which would reach almost 28 million plays on Spotify! He became the fastest EVER unsigned artist to reach 25 million streams – it’s safe to say that he didn’t say unsigned for much longer.

This kick-started a period of touring with some big names in the music industry. We’re talking Rag’n’Bone Man, Ellie Goulding, Kygo, James Bay and Niall Horan. Sam Smith also had Capaldi open a few of their gigs, and so did RSL alumni Ed Sheeran!

In what would become true Capaldi style, he made history becoming the first artist to sell out an arena tour before having released an album – an incredible achievement! The shows sold out in one second.

Rising Star

But it’s about time we talked about that unbelievable tune that shook the music industry to its core. Of course, we’re talking about “Someone You Loved”. By March of 2019, this song was number one on the UK Singles Chart where it held firm for seven weeks. Not long after that, it reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 too. Its incredible reception led to a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year, a category in which it WON the Brit Award!

In May 2019, the world finally got that Lewis Capaldi album that we were waiting for, his debut, Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent, which reached the top spot in the UK Albums Chart. It became the best-selling album of both 2019 AND 2020 in the UK, with “Someone You Loved” being the best-selling single of 2019 and eventually the longest-running top ten single of ALL TIME by a British artist. Wow!

Aside from beautiful music, we all know and love Lewis Capaldi for his inimitable social media presence, although this has been put on hold whilst he writes his next album. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for this rising star, and certainly can’t wait to catch a glimpse of the next album which is rumoured to be released in 2022.

If you enjoyed learning a little bit more about Mr Capaldi, there’s plenty more where that came from. He joins a fantastic line up of musicians on the Rockschool Vocals Grade 6 syllabus, including Sarah Vaughan, The Weeknd and Ariana Grande.
