From local Northern lad to worldwide super star, the last ten years have been a wild ride for Harry Styles!

Boy Band Beginnings!

His journey into the public eye began in 2010. Little 16-year-old Styles appeared on one of the biggest talent shows in the UK, The X Factor. It was looking as though it could all be over when he didn’t make it through the bootcamp phase, but Harry was brought back to team up with fellow contestants Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik. You probably know what happens next…

One Direction was born and little did they know what would be in store for them. The band went through to the final of the competition, finishing in third place, but their success story had many more chapters in it yet. They signed a record deal with Simon Cowell’s label, Syco Records, and shortly after released “What Makes You Beautiful”, a single that would debut straight at number one. Every single one of One Direction’s albums went to the top spot in the UK charts. They became one of the best-selling boybands of all time, with millions of adoring fans across the globe, and were the recipients of many awards.

After a whirlwind 5 years, much to fans’ disappointment, One Direction decided to take an extended break from the band, not wanting to “exhaust” the fans. We do wonder whether this has been left open for a reunion in a few years’ time… What do you think?!

Icon Status

And so, Harry Styles’ solo career could begin. He signed a contract with Columbia Records before dropping his first single, “Sign of the Times”. This glam-rock influenced power ballad went straight to the number one spot – the fans were obsessed! Described as having elements of psychedelia, BritPop and even being evocative of the king David Bowie himself, it’s safe to say that the world was a fan of solo Styles, including us! That’s right, we loved the Harry Styles sound so much that we’ve included “Sign of the Times” in the new Rockschool Vocals Grade 2 syllabus for your (and our) enjoyment.

On a slightly different note, Styles has become somewhat of a style icon. From flamboyant suits to sheer blouses and floral prints, pink suits and sequined tops, Harry isn’t afraid to be bold with his fashion choices. He has been praised by some of the biggest names in the fashion game, including designer Michael Kors who deemed Styles “the modern embodiment of British rocker style: edgy, flamboyant and worn with unapologetic swagger”.

Harry Styles’ next album was released in December 2019, and produced many a successful single including “Lights Up, “Adore You”, “Golden”, and what seems to be a current fan favourite, “Watermelon Sugar”. “Watermelon Sugar” has been such a huge hit that it became his first number one single in the US, as well as earning him a Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance and a Brit Award for British Single of the Year. Wow.

We have loved learning a little more about Harry Styles this week, and we hope you have too! Why not check out some of the other incredible artists that feature on the Rockschool Vocals syllabus, including Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift and Rihanna.
